Your Questions Answered: Could Your Hair Loss Signal a Deeper Issue

September 10, 2024

September is Alopecia (Hair Loss) Awareness Month! Each week, we’re diving into one of the most common questions we receive about hair loss, shedding light on symptoms, causes, treatments and much more.

Question: Can hair loss be a sign of something serious?

Answer: Absolutely YES! In fact, hair loss is often a clue that something’s going on within the body. In other words: Hair loss is a SYMPTOM!

Let’s start with the basics: the hair follicle.

Each follicle is like a tiny, vital organ, receiving its blood supply from the same network that nourishes your major organs and tissues. When there’s a disturbance—be it inflammation, hormonal imbalances, organ failure, toxic exposure, or nutritional deficiencies—your follicles suffer too! When they don’t get what they need, or when toxins interfere, the hair strands can break, shed or simply fail to grow, leaving you with thinning or bald patches.

In some cases, dealing with the problem is straightforward, like with iron deficiency anemia. Treating the underlying issue (anemia) with a supplement is usually the answer. However, for more complex conditions such as kidney failure or lupus, a comprehensive medical evaluation is crucial. This involves a detailed medical workup to diagnose the cause, create a treatment plan, and restore your overall health.

At Agape, we’re dedicated to getting to the root of your hair loss concerns. We take a meticulous approach—asking the right questions, conducting thorough examinations, and, if necessary, obtaining additional lab work.
